Alberta Uyghur Association is your local non-profit organization Which strives to promote, advocate, and educate on the human rights abuses happening to Uyghurs and other Turkic ethnic people in East Turkestan, through peaceful, non-violent and democratic means.
President Bio
Mukerrem Qurban is the Director of Alberta Uyghur Association. She was born in East Turkestan and studied at Xinjiang University in 1985. In 1989 she finished schooling and went to work as an editor for a local newspaper. Mukerrem has been involved in the cause since her youth and her participation has grown since then. She has been involved in organizing student movements against the CCP, planning activities, events, rallies and creating posters to raise awareness.
She had proven to be an asset at the pro-democracy demonstrations at Xinjiang University in 1985 and 1989. In 2002, she left East Turkestan to study abroad then later came to Edmonton, Canada where she also held many protests and events. She also organized a plethora of Uyghur events globally.
Program and Outreach Manager Bio
Mehliya Cetinkaya is the Program and Outreach Manager of Alberta Uyghur Association [AUA]. She is our youngest activist. Going to protests and learning about her culture and history. By age 14 she began to do interviews, organize protests, conferences and photo galleries in Edmonton with her mother Mukerrem Qurban. She is not only a uyghur human rights activist but also an activist for other human rights and climate change. She currently is an IB highschool student, who hopes to study law in the future. Mehliya dedicates her time to use her privilege living in a world with free speech to help those in need.
